A Geezer Looks at Processors
My view of the latest and greatest
I admit, I'm confused. First you hear one thing about Pentium IV, and then another. I did pretty well with a 4040, but it just wouldn't support those compilers. For that I needed a 80286. Anyway, there have been noises about Motorola chips again: Heck, they were always good -- why does it always have to be one thing or another? Do we say about the guy next door, "He got his lawnmower from Caterpillar -- If he had any brains, he'd get a John Deere." Sure we do. What does that mean? I don't know.
If that isn't enough, now we're talking about Athelon and Cyrix. Until you get your next lawnmower, people who know (those actually performing real benchmarks) say that Pentium IV and Linux (kernel 2.4+ recommended) are doing some good things. What things? Hey, follow the link -- I'm not going to retype the article.
