What are the best ways of finding out what a pill contains?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
The best ways of finding out what your pill contains is through a chemical process that both cost a lot of money and includes expensive machinery that needs to be operated by a person with a lot of knowledge.  For the common user there are three ways of finding out what drugs the pills contain. The first way, is to eat the pill and see what happens. This method seems to be the most widely dispersed one, but also the least secure one. A second, slightly more secure method is to learn how MDMA (ecstasy) tastes like, and lick the pill before you eat it. But this method far from foolproof. The remaining method is the one that I encourage most people to undertake.  Buy yourself a testing kit and test the pills yourself.

How can I taste Ecstasy
(by Charlie_Denmark) (back to top)
The taste of MDMA is awful. If you try to suck a pill instead of swallowing it, you’ll agree with me. The first time, you won’t be able to tell if it’s MDMA or some other awful-tasting drug. However, if you adopt the practice always to suck your pills for a few seconds before you swallow them, you’ll quickly learn to recognize the taste of MDMA. From then on, you can make sure that the pills you buy are the real thing, MDMA, and not some other shit. (They could contain more than one

What is an ecstasy testing kit?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
Since adulterated ecstasy pills are more common than real pills in most countries it might be a good idea to figure out what you are about to put into your mouth before you actually do it. Various organizations who work towards harms reduction are offering, for a small donation, a product that will enable you to tell ... roughly... what the pill contains. The product cannot tell you how much of each drug the pill contain though, neither can it detect multiple drugs.
The bottle you will receive if you order it, contains a liquid combination of various chemicals called a "Marquis reagent". Quite plainly it is a combination of chemicals that react with different drugs in different ways. Since the product being sold as harms reduction kits, changes colour according to the drug it interacts with, it enables the user to get a quick, and rough idea of the quality of the pill.

Who  sells ecstasy testing kits?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
I do not know about the legal status of testing kits in every country, but if it is legal like here in Australia, you can buy them from various shops. Shops selling bongs or similar products might be a good place to start looking. If you cannot find a testing kit in your city, if it is illegal (like in my native Norway), or if you simply prefer ordering it from the net, you can do so by contacting one of the following organizations and place an online order. The delivery time seem to vary enormously though, from less than a week at the quickest to almost two months at the latest.
DanceSafe - click here to read about their product and/or place and order
EZ test - click here to read about their product and/or place and order

How much do the testing kits cost?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
If you buy your testing kit from a local shop the price may of course vary from country to country, or shop to shop. If you purchase online. The EZ-test are priced at €20 each (2 for €35, 3 for €45, 5 for €60). The DanceSafe kit will set you back US$25. (US$20 for additional kits). €1 is about $0.90
EZ-test donate €2,50 to Bluelight.nu per testing kit sold, whilst DanceSafe, who claim they are not selling test kits, but rather giving them away after receiving a US$ 25 donation, use the profit to help maintaining their own harms reduction programs

How do the testing kits work?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
The bottle you will receive if you order it, contains a liquid combination of various chemicals called a "Marquis reagent". Quite plainly it is a combination of chemicals that react with different drugs in different ways.
When you buy the kit, you will get instructions to how they are to  be used. Quite simply you scrape of a small piece of the pill, and drip one drop of the liquid onto the small part you scraped of. According to the colour change of the liquid and the time it took to change, you can figure out what the pill contain. Again it is important to note that this is not a 100% secure method. But it is 1000 times better than not testing at all.

Are the kits dangerous?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
You do not want to spill the liquid anywhere. It contains an acid that will burn your skin if you get in contact with it. Make sure to always store the liquid as indicated on the bottle, or in the brochure that was included in the kit. If the liquid gets in contact with you skin, or even worse: your eyes, then wash thoroughly with water for several minutes and call a doctor if the pain persists. I am not even going to say that you should not drink the liquid, cause if you are that dumb, than you are eligible for the Darwin award

Are the kits legal?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
I have no idea which countries the kits are legal in. I would assume however that they are legal in most countries.  What I know for sure is that it is...
not legal in....
Norway
legal in...
Australia, Great Britain, The Netherlands, The USA
I would be very happy if you could tell me the legal status of these products in your country. It is quite interesting that the chemical compound itself is almost universally legal. It just becomes illegal when they put it in a fancy bottle and place a sticker around it.. go figure.

How long is a kit good for?
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
The vaults of Erowid claims that people have had problems with their kits as early as six months after the purchase. This is not very likely though. You should however replace the kit at least every 12 months or so.

Information about colour changes
(by Tommy Kristiansen) (back to top)
No colour change
If the liquid does not change colour, the pill does not contain MDMA (ecstasy), or MDE, MDA, 2C-B, DOM, DOB, DXM, Methamphetamine or amphetamine. No colour change does not mean it does not contain any drug, it just means it does not contain any of the above mentioned ones. The infamous drug PMA, who have resulted in several deaths worldwide for instance will not make the liquid change colour. If the liquid does not change colour there is an indication that the pill is either completely fake, or contains something you don't really want to put in your body anyway. Avoid eating any pill that come out without a colour change
Black or dark purple
This is what you are looking for. Black or dark purple means MDMA (Ecstasy) or related chemicals like MDE or MDA. However, you must pay attention to how fast it changes colour. If the pill turns to black really slowly (10+ seconds) it is DXM, not any of the above mentioned substances. DXM is not something you should mix with MDMA, as the combination can be quite dangerous. DXM will also cause a bit of smoke to arose from the liquid. The ecstasy-like chemicals might also do this, but not as much smoke as DXM generates. Remember. Real ecstasy will change colour immediately.
Bright Yellow or Green
2C-B, DOM or DOB.
Bright Orange
Methamphetamine or amphetamine
Other Colours
If the liquid changes colour into something else than what is mentioned above, you can be fairly sure the pill does not contain any of the drugs mentioned above. It might however contain some other, possibly dangerous chemical. Stay clear. Opiates will change colours to pink or purple, but don't worry about that, cause you will not ever find Heroin in ecstasy pills (read more about this here)
According to The vaults of Erowid, you can expect the below-mentioned drugs to change colours as indicated. If you recognise one of these colour changes you might want to read up on the drug before you take the pill. In that case, The vaults of Erowid is a good place to start. If you have links to places that explain other colour changes for other drugs, please mail me at ecstasy-faq@tommykristiansen.com
2C-T-2  Orange to Red (usually a sort of salmon colour)
2C-T-7  Orange to Red (salmon, again; also, there is less tendency towards orange than 2C-T-2 shows)
4-Acetoxy-DiPT    Dirty (blackish) olive
5-MeO-DiPT    Fizzes then turns yellow quickly changing to a slightly rusty orange
Alpha-Methyl-DiPT    Fizzes then turns brown
AMT    Dark brownish-yellow
Benzylpiperazine    No colour change, but it causes the reagent to fizz. Looks like when you pour hydrogen peroxide on a cut.
DiPT    Fizzes strongly then turns a neon yellow
DPT    Dirty olive
Phenolphthalein    Crimson
