4.1 What kind of engine does it have?

The Audi TT has a:

Front Mounted, transverse, in-line 4-cylinder with 5 valves per cylinder, turbocharged, charged air intercooling engine.
Displacement: 1.8 liters (107 cu. in.)
Cylinder Block: cast iron
Cylinder Head: Aluminum alloy
Bore: 3.18 in.
Stroke: 3.40 in.
Compression Ratio: 9.5:1
Fuel injection/ignition system: ME.7 Motronic (R)with electric multi-point sequential fuel injection, hot film air mass sensor, solid state direct ignition with multiple coils, dual knock sensors with cylinder selective knock control, electronic throttle operation and fully adaptive controls.
Valve train/intake: DOHC, belt driven, hydraulic lifters
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2
Horsepower (SAE net): 180 hp @ 5500 rpm
Torque: 173 lbs.ft. @ 1950 to 4700 rpm
Max Turbo boost: 1.8 bar (0.8 bar gage)

4.3 How should I break in the car?

The following was posted to the audi-tt.org forum by Steve Wingard:

Here was what VW recommended in the manual for our '99 Passat (with the 1.8T 150hp engine):

For the first 600 miles:
* don't go faster than 3/4 of top speed (3/4 of 132mph is 99mph...)
* avoid using full throttle
* avoid high engine RPM (but they never define exactly how high is "high".)

From 600 to 1000 miles, you can work your way up to max speeds and RPM.

The "apocryphal" story on break-in behavior is that if you pamper the engine during break-in, it'll be "weak" forever after. "Break it in the way you'll drive it for real," they say. I personally tend toward this view, but I think it's still prudent to avoid bouncing off the rev limiter as you drive your new TT (with 0.5 miles on it) away from the dealer's lot. ;-)

You may want to choose a path somewhere between the two extremes.

In older VW manuals, I've read other advice like "Drive at varying speeds -- don't run the engine at a constant speed for extended periods of time." (For example, setting your cruise control and driving across Nebraska right after taking delivery is bad...) The '99 manual doesn't say anything about that, but I think it's still sound advice.

And THEN there's the "oil war"...

VW/Audi swear up and down that they put special "break-in" oil at the factory and they really want it to be kept in for the first 5000 miles (7500 for normally aspirated engines) before changing. In fact, if you insist on doing the first change early, you'll have to DIY; your Audi service department will probably refuse to schedule an early change. This just freaks out some people who have nightmare visions of metal flashing flowing through their new engine. If you do decide to go ahead and do the first change early, *DO NOT* use synthetic -- the piston rings won't seat properly, and your engine will have higher oil consumption from then on.

Check the FAQ over at A4.org and do a search on "break in". LOTS of discussion.
