Garion has beaten the evil God Torak and has taken his rightful place as the Rivan King, but the Dark Prophecy is not yet gone. As the Seers have foretold, a Choice must be made between the Dark and Light Prophecies soon, and once again Garion must take up his duties as Child of Light.
Because his young son Geran is abducted, Garion and his loyal companions, including his wife Ce Nedra, Lady Polgara, Belgarath the Sorcerer, Durnik the smith and of course Silk, begin a journey through the Mallorean continent which proves to be their most dangerous yet...
The boy Errand had a family at last. After Torak was defeated, he came to live with Polgara and Durnik in the Vale. His time of growing up was one of many events, though, for finally Belgarion of Riva and his wife Ce'Nedra had produced an heir and son. There were also a lot of troubles with the Bear-Cult and therefore it were the cultists that were the first suspects when the infant Rivan Prince Geran was abducted. It turned out, though, that Prophecy wasn't quite yet through with the Child of Light.
Once again, Garion and his companions set off on a long and dangerous quest. Zandramas, the Child of Dark, has abducted the infant son of Garion and Ce'Nedra. Geran's parents try everything to get their son back, even if it is travelling into the lands of Cthol Murgos. They face evil Grolims and meet the remarkable new King of the Murgos, Urgit. Finally, however, they are captured by Zakath, Emperor of Mallorea, and even though their quest is urgent, he is determined not to let Garion and his companions go.
As the new threat of demons grows worse, the Malloreon Emperor leads his captives to the capital city of Mal Zeth. Zakath and Belgarion get to know each other better and a somewhat awkward friendschip between the two of them begins to grow. Many things, though ,still stand in its way, such as the fact that Garion and his companions absolutely have to be at Torak's castle of Ashaba soon. Prophecy makes it necessary, for there are still many things awaiting at Ashaba that must be revailed before the quest can continue.
While the kings and queens of the West have council, the quest of Garion and his companions goes on to Melcena, where the Orb leads to the trail of its opposite, the Sardion. They close in more everytime on Zandramas, mostly because the Grolim Priestess is also involved in the political struggle that runs across Mallorea. Garion and his companions make their way through the battles and conflicts coming closer and closer to their final goal. When Zakath catches up with them, it appears that the Prophecy has plan for the Emperor, also.
At Kell Belgarath will find the solution to the mysterious location where the final meeting between the two Prophecies will take place. This great event will depend upon the Choice of one of the Seeresses of Kell, Cyradis. From the West Garion's old friends journey to the Korim Reef, where the Choice will be made, and Poledra, Belgarath's wife and Polgara's mother, joins them at last and thus fullfills the necessary number of companions. All know that the fate of the universe will be decided in this event.
