Finally, in the two prequels to the Belgariad and Malloreon, we can read about the lives of Belgarath the Sorcerer and his daughter, Lady Polgara the Sorceress. Now that all is over, Garion bullies his Grandfather into writing down the story of his life, and Ce Nedra does pretty much the same with her husbands Aunt. The stories will provide a necessary background for their children, she states. And she is more right than she realises, for these two wonderful books are truly the crown jewel to the epic of the Belgariad and the Malloreon. No less so, is the Rivan Codex. In this great work, you can read all the background developments of the authors themselves!

Belgarath the Sorcerer Seven thousand years ago, a young boy named Garath entered the Vale and became the first Disciple of the God Aldur. Belgarath learned many things during his years in the Vale, varying from the Will and the World, to the nature of people and the power of love. He was destined to be a vessel of Necessity and together with his wife and daughters he had to go through many trials in order to fullfill Prophecy and prepare the world for the return of the Rivan King, who would be the Child of Light.

Polgara the Sorceress Polgara was born in the Vale of Aldur, and her youth was a time of trouble. Though she still guided her in thoughts, her mother was no longer with her and Necessity demanded that she and her beloved twin sister Beldaran would be seperated. But Polgara, being educated by both her parents and lead through life by times of great love and sorrow, was destined to become a powerful sorceress, a Disciple of Aldur and mostly, the guardian of the Rivan Line.
