This document compares the enumerations of burials in the Hooser Cemetery (located between Frost and Italy, Ellis County, Texas, on land still in the Hooser family) in independent censuses taken in 1956, 1988, and 2000.

1956 Census

The 1956 census “Hooser Cemetery in Slay Community” was compiled December 4, 1956, by Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Feltenberger, Genealogical Records Committee, Rebecca Boyce Chapter, Waxahachie, Texas, and published in TEXAS GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, ELLIS COUNTY, 1775—1956, VOLUME 1X. No unmarked graves were noted.

1988 Census

The 1988 census “Marked Graves in the Slay Cemetery, Italy, Texas,” was compiled May 15, 1988, under the direction of Mrs. Curtis W. Meadows, working with Homer A. Scott.[2] Mrs. Meadows, who has relatives buried in the cemetery, paid $2,000 to Randy McClain to have the cemetery cleaned up and a list of burials made. In a letter from Mrs. Meadows to Mr. Scott, she indicated that “there are 15 graves that are marked with bricks and stobs [sic] with no names.” The census lists only names, no dates (with a few exceptions).

2000 Census

The 2000 census “Blanton-Hooser Cemetery Tombstone Listing, Ellis County, Texas,” was compiled by Jeffrey B. and Justin B. Hightower July 24, 2000, and published on the Ellis County, Texas, rootsweb web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txellis/. They indicated that the census was 90% complete and that the cemetery was badly overgrown. They noted one headstone on which the last name could not be read and three stones unreadable because they were face down.
