Carrier Battle Example ( Simple )
Here is a sample battle to help explain some of the concepts of Battle Craft and how they work in a normal game. For this example we use the following forces.
Comet Empire:
1 x HSSCV |
EDF
The Yamato/ Argo's flight group. All EDF pilots count as veterans in this example. |
2 x CTF squadrons ( 3 flights of 6 B.C. each ) One Sq. w/ Attack missiles one w/ Attack torpedoes |
Setup:
For the sake of example we will simplify setup. The EDF units appear on the side of the map, moving at speed 12. CTF Squadron one ( 3 flights ) Is assigned escort mission 2 flights with CTF Sqd. 2 and 1 flight with CTAB. while CTF Squadron two and the CTAB squadron are assigned Anti-ship missions. The are broken down into two battlegroups. One
Battlegroup 1....... 1 flight of CTF w/ AM assigned the escort mission
3 flights of CTAB w/ AT1 Assigned Anti-ship Mission
Battlegroup 2...... 2 flights of CTF w/ AM, assigned the Escort mission
3 flights of CTF w/ AT1 Assigned Anti-ship Mission
C.E.. The HSSCV has it's weapons assigned to the defense bridge. The 2 Scorpion flights are in the same hex as the HSSCV flying CAP. Assigned the CAP Mission.
Turn 1
EDF Has initiative. The HSSCV moves 4 hexes forward. Putting it 14 hexes away from the EDF Fighter groups. As stated in the rules although the EDF has initiative most of the EDF B.C. have the Anti-ship mission profile so they will always move first before B.C. with the CAP mission profile. Moving at speed 12 the two EDF Battlegroups move to within 2 hexes of the HSSCV. The Comet player moves both of his CAP squadrons into the same hex as EDF battlegroup 1. Intending to attack the CTABs in that group.
After Battlecraft movement is ship based declaration of fire(12). Since all the weapons on the HSSCV are assigned to the defense bridge there is nothing to declare this phase.
Next is Battlecraft weapons launch declaration (13). EDF battlegroup 2 declares it is launching 18 AT1s at the HSSCV. Both C.E. flights declare they are launching AM1s at the escorting CTF in battlegroup 1. Battlegroup 1 declares that the are firing their secondary weapons (lasers) at the attack C.E. flights.
Battlecraft to battlecraft combat (14) this gets a little complex. The two C.E. flights are attacking the CTAB flights however there is one flight of CTF escorting the CTAB. Since the EDF units are combined into a battlegroup the Comet Empire B.C. must get through the escorts before they can attack the CTABs. The rules state that they must double up on each escort before they can attack the CTABs. Since there are six escorts ( 1 flight ) and 12 Attackers ( 2 flights ) then all the attackers must attack the escorts. The Attackers declared that they were using AM ( attack missiles ) for this attack while the escorts had declared that they were using their secondary weapons ( Lasers) The attackers go first and roll 12 D10s for the 12 AM. Each AM has a 50% chance to hit. The C.E. player rolls a little below average and scores 5 hits. Destroying 5 escorts. The Escorts fire back. Each has a base 40% chance to hit and a 30% possibility of the +10% veteran bonus. ( 2 is rolled on a D10, so the CTFs get the Veteran bonus) However these fighters still have their primary weapons package and as a result recieve a -20%.. This Gives them a total of 30% to hit. Each escort gets two rolls for a total of 12 d10. They roll and score four hits, destroying four of the attackers. This ends the B.C. to B.C. combat phase.
Ships Defensive fire.
The only ship, The HSSCV declare that it will fire the only 2 SD in the correct firing arc at the incoming 18 AT1s. While it will fire one B battery and one A battery at the Battlegroup 2's escorts one of the flights of CTF escorting the CTABs. The two SD batteries fire ( 50% ) but only one hits, scoring 2d4 damage on the AT1.s they score 5 points of damage and, thus destroy 5 of the incoming AT1s. (Leaving 13) The A and B batteries fire in DP mode but only the A battery hits doing 1D4 damage. However the HSSCV WDF states that the A batteries are half strength. So a damage roll of 2 becomes a 1. Destroying 1 CTF in Battlegroup 2.
Battlecraft fire phase.
Now to resolve the only remaining weapons. The 13 remaining AT1s that are heading to the HSSCV. The range is 2 hexes. That's short range for AT1 so the EDF player has a 50% chance to hit. The EDF player rolls and scores 8 hits. The AT1 does 2 pts of damage each so the EDF player scores 16 points damage to the HSSCV. That's enough to score 1 Critical hit on the HSSCV and the EDF player rolls on that chart. Rolling a 78. 78 is a critical hull hit and has a 1 in 6 chance of scoring an extra d4 damage. The EDF player rolls a four so no addition damage is done.
That completes one turn. At the end of the turn losses for the EDF were one CTF in Battlegroup 2(defensive fire from the HSSCV) and five CTF in battlegroup 1(Dogfighting C.E. Scorpion fighters).
The Comet Empire player lost 4 Scorpion fighters to dogfighting and suffered 16 hits on the HSSCV.
