Adela is the English form of an Old Germanic name Athala (Adala) from “adal” or “athal” (noble).

History:
Adela was originally a Norman name. An early bearer was St. Adela (d.734), a daughter of Dagobert II (650-679) a king of Austrasia (Northeastern France). Adela was introduced to England after 1066 by the Normans, via a daughter of William the Conqueror. The name, however, remained rare. In France, though, Adéle was common. In the 19th century, Adela was revived (via the French Adéle).
