: English
Etymology:
Alberic comes from an Old Germanic name, Albirich, meaning “Elf Ruler” from “aelf” (elf) and “ric” (ruler, power).

History:
The Old Germanic name Albirich became Aelfric in Old English and Alberi, then Aubrey, in Normandy. After the Normans invaded England in 1066, Aubrey (Aubrey de Vere was a companion of William the Conqueror) replaced Aelfric. In the 18th century, the old Latin form, Albericus, was revived and Alberic was formed from it in the 19th century. It lasted for a while, but has since disappeared.

Pronunciation: al-bear-ick.

French (Norman): Alberi, Auleri, Aubrey.
