Alexandra

Gender: Feminine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Alexandra is the feminine form of Alexander. Originally it meant “Defender of the People,” from “alex” (defender), and “ander” (man).

History:
Although Alexandra first appeared in England in 1205 (and Alexandria in 1218), these likely were only Latin feminine “translations” for girls named (in everday life) Alexander.
Other than these early examples, Alexandra, was rarely found outside of Russia until Edward VII of Great Britain (then Prince of Wales) married Princess Alexandra of Denmark. It has been revived at the end of the 20th century.
