Alwyn is a modern spelling of the Old English name Aethelwine meaning “Noble Friend” from “aethel” (elf) and “wine” (friend).

History:
Alwyn was originally, as Aethelwine, an Old English name that was transformed into Alwyn by the Normans by the late 12th century. It was rare by the 14th century.

It may have been revived by English novelist Thomas Holcroft’s 1780 Alwyn, or the Gentleman Comedian.
