Amber is an English word for a gem and a shade of yellow. It comes from Arabic and means Precious Thing. The gems are a form of fossilized tree resin. Sometimes, one can find ancient insects preserved within them.

Amber was one of the least successful of the jewel names favored by the Victorians at the end of the 19th century. Its revival, and spectacular subsequent popularity, is probably due to Kathleen Wingers book Forever Amber (1944).
