Etymology:
Ambrose is the English form of a Greek name, Ambrosios, meaning “Immortal.”

History:
Ambrose, the English name, comes from the Old French version of a Late Latin name, Ambrosius, from the Greek Ambrosios. Although it was the name of several early saints (early Christians liked the connotations of immortality) the name was never common in England, rarely found after the 12th and 13th centuries (though it was popular in Ireland). Ambrose occured slightly more often in the United States due (probably) to Civil War hero Ambrose Burnside (1824-1881).
