Angelo

Gender: Masculine
Language
: Italian, Spanish
Etymology:
Angelo is an Italian (and Spanish) name based on “angel” from a Hebrew word meaning “messenger.”

History:
Angeles, a male name, was first used in the Byzantine Empire as a religious name. The feminine form (Angela) was formed soon afterwards. The name was popularized in the rest of Europe by St. Angelus who was martyred in Sicily in 1222 and was known there as St. Angelo.

The name Angelo spread thence to England (Angel) and France (Ange) and Spain (Ángel, Angelo).

Among Spanish speakers, traditionally, Angelo is not found as often as Ángel.

Angelus, in all its forms declined and disappeared in Protestant countries after the Reformation and even in faded in Catholic countries.

In the United States Angelo was introduced by Italian immigrants and (to a lesser extent) Spanish-speaking settlers and immigrants. It reached its peak in the 1910s (a time of heavy Italian immigration), but has not declined all that much and remains common today. It is favored, perhaps, because of its transparent etymology.

Angelo, in the United States, was originally, occasionally given to Catholic children born on the eve of St. Michael and All Angels.
