Etymology:
Armand is a French name, taken from the Old Provençal name Armans, which was from Old French name Hermans, from the Germanic name Germanic Hariman (Herman), which meant “Soldier” from “heri” or “harja” (army), and “man” (man).

History:
The German name Hariman, became Hermans in Old France. When taken to Old Provençe it became Armans, which was then imported back north in its new form and changed into Armand.

Although previously a favorite among French-speakers, Armand has been declining throughout the 20th century.
