History:
The Renaissance caused a revival of interest in intellectual Europe in the writings of Ancient Greece and Rome. Many Ancient Greek and Roman names were revived for their poetry and plays. Aspasia was one of these.

Aspasia was the name of the mistress of Pericles. It is later found in the Beaumont and Fletcher play The Maid’s Tragedy from 1619, and was occasionally used as a name in the 17th century.
