Aubrey
Gender: Masculine, Feminine
Language: English
Etymology:
Aubrey is the Norman French form of an Old Germanic name, Albirich (Alberic), meaning Elf Ruler from aelf (elf) and ric (ruler, power).
History:
In Anglo-Saxon Germany Albirich became Aelfric, but after the Normans invaded England in 1066, Aubrey replaced Aelfric. It was fairly common in the Middle Ages, but did not survive them. Aubrey was revived in the 19th century.
In recent years Aubrey has been given as a feminine name, perhaps due to its similarities to Audrey.
