Augustine
Gender: Masculine, Feminine
Language: English, French
Etymology:
Augustine is the English form of Augustinius, from Augustus. Augustus is a Latin word for Venerable, Consecrated, Majestic, or Grandeur. It comes from augere (to increase).
History:
Although Augustine belonged to St. Augustine (the first Archbishop of Canterbury), the man responsible for converting Anglo-Saxon England to Christianity, the name was not found in England before the Norman Invasion of 1066. Afterwards, it became common, often in the contracted form of Austin.
Augustine, as Austen, declined after the Reformation, surviving only as a transferred surname.
The full, learned form of Augustine was revived by the Tractarian religious movement of the 19th century, but it never caught on.
