Baldwin

Gender: Masculine
Language
: English
Etymology:
Baldwin comes from an old Germanic name, Baldavin, meaning “Bold Friend” from “baldo” (bold) and “win” (friend).

History:
Baldwin was a favorite name in Flanders (Belgium) and northern France. The Normans brought it with them when they conquered England and it replaced the Old English equivalent name, Bealdwine.

Baldwin found in England from the 12th to 17th centuries. The name never quite disappeared, although modern use (in English countries, anyway) probably derives more from the surname.

Pronunciation: bald-win.
