Bartholomew is the English form of an Aramaic surname (bar-Talmai) meaning “Son of Talmai.” Talmai is a name meaning “Furrows,” or “Ploughman.”

History:
Bartholomew, the surname of one of the apostles (Nathaneal), was a very popular European medieval name. It was brought to England with the Norman Invasion of 1066 and has been fairly common there from the 12th century to the Reformation.
