Etymology:
Berenice, or Bernice, is the English form of a Macedonian name, Berenike, a form of the Greek name Pherenike. It means "Bringing Victory."


History:
Berenice was popular at the beginning of the Christian era, after to the marriage of Ptolemy I of Egypt to a Grecian widow of that name. Due to a mention of a Bernice (Berenice) in the New Testament, the name also became a fairly popular Puritan name.
It was revived at the end of the 19th century with the usual spelling of Bernice.
