Biddy is an Irish and English diminutive for the name Bridget. Bridget is the English form of the French Brigette, based on the Latin Brigitta, based on Brighid (or Brigit) a Celtic name meaning Lofty, or the High One.
History:
Biddy probably developed out of a childs pronunciation of Briddy, which would be short for Bridget. The nickname Biddy fell out of use after it became slang for an Irishwomen, later for an old woman, especially a meddling old woman. The word biddy is also an old term for a hen. It its not really found in the United States from the late 1800s on.
