Brenda
Gender: Feminine
Language: English
Etymology:
1. Brenda is the feminine form of Brand, a Germanic, Scandinavian name from brandr. Originally it meant Sword or Torch.
-or-
2. Brenda is often used as a modern English feminine form of Brendan and Brandon, though the names are unrelated etymologically.
History:
Brenda is a name that was probably created in the Shetland Islands, a group of islands in the North Sea. Though Scottish, the islands were controlled by Norway for over five centuries. The name Brenda was probably coined from the name Brand.
Sir Walter Scott used it for one of the heroine Brenda Troil of his 1821 novel The Pirate, set in the Shetlands. Scotts novels were enormously popular throughout the Victorian Age and many of the unusual names he used were taken up by the English-speaking populace.
Brenda was a rare name in the 19th century in the United States, being slightly more popular in England. It was popularized in the 20th century, probably by the poor-little-rich-girl Brenda Diana Duff Frazier. She was born in 1921, her parents went through a highly publicized divorce trial in 1925 and her debut in 1938 made the cover of Life magazine.
By the 1950s Brenda was an enormously popular name. Not on for its own sake, but because it was associated with trendy Irish names like Brandon and Brendan. By the late 20th century it had begun to slowly decline, but nevertheless remains quite common.
