Cadfael is known today as the name of “Brother Cadfael” a medieval Welsh monk who solves murder mysteries in 12th century England in a series of novels by Ellis Peters.
In A Rare Benedictine (1988), Ms. Peters relates how Cadfael was a very rare Welsh name, the original name of 5th century St. Cadog. She found it “only once in Welsh history.”
