Cameron comes from a Scottish Gaelic surname, coming from a nickname meaning “Crooked Nose” from “cam shron.”

Occasionally, Cameron is a Scotification of the place named Cambernon meaning “crooked hill.”

History:
Cameron is an aristocratical Scottish surname transferred (along with many other aristocratical Scottish surnames) for use as a first name.

Originally, it would have been bestowed upon sons (very occasionally daughters) as either a first or a middle name in order to honor the Cameron surname. For example, a woman named Mary Cameron who married a man named John Smith, may name her son John Cameron Smith, or merely Cameron Smith.
