Carola is the feminine form of Carolus, the Latin form of Charles. Charles is a French and English form of an Old Germanic name, Karl. It comes from the word “ceorl,” which means “man.”

History:
Carola had been coined in the late 17th century as a feminine form of the Latin Carolus. The name was found among the “Royalists,” that is, supporters of King Charles I (beheaded in 1649) and his son Charles II (who fled to France).

Carola became Carole in France, then Carol in English (in the 19th century).
