Carole

Gender: Feminine
Language
: English, French
Etymology:
Carole is the French form of Carola, the feminine form of Carolus, the Latin form of Charles, which came from the Germanic word “ceorl,” which means “man,” or “freeman.”

History:
Carole with the “e” was the original form of Carol used in England. Imported from France, the “e” signified that it was a feminine name. It was spelling without the “e” that became the most common there. However, when Carol began rising in popularity in the United States, Carole did too.

Please see Carol for additional information.

Pronunciation: care-ull.
