Etymology:
Cosmo comes from a Latin name meaning “Order.”

History:
Cosmo is a Latin name, a favorite in medieval Italy, where (as Cosimo) it was popular among the powerful Medici family.

Cosmo was introduced to England by Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon (1678-1760) who named his son Cosmo about 1721 in honor of Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. It remained a very rare name.

American television audiences were introduced to the name in the 1990s when it was revealed a wacky character on the popular television show Seinfeld was named “Cosmo Kramer.”
