Etymology and History:
The name Darren (and its variants) is an odd case. It arose, quite suddenly, in the late fifties, for no obvious reason. One theory says that its popularity can be traced to the popular television show Bewitched, running from 1964 to 1972, featuring a character Darrin Stephens. Darren (as well as its variants), however, were climbing the charts for several years before the show premiered. An alternate theory claims that Bobby Darin is responsible for the sudden rise. It is true that Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto, 1936-1973) burst onto the scene in 1958 with “Splish Splash,” but it was the spelling “d-a-r-r-e-n” and not “d-a-r-i-n” that caught on initially. He either chose his name from a burnt-out neon sign originally reading Mandarin, or from a surname picked randomly in a phone book. Another influence may have been American actor Darren McGavin, born in 1922.

It is my guess that Darren arose as an alternative to the highly popular name Darrell.
