Deon is another form of Dion, short for Dionysius, the Latin form of Dionysios. Originally a Greek name, it meant “Honored by Dionysos,” the Greek god of wine. The “dio” part of the name is a reference to a god, originally Zeus.

At the end of the 20th century, Deon became especially common among African-Americans in the United States.
