Dewayne began use as an alternative form of the Irish name Duane, or Dwayne. Duane is the Anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic name Dubhán (or it s surname Ó Dubháin), from “dubh” meaning “Black.”

Later, Dewayne was probably taken as the prefix “de” added to the popular name Wayne. Wayne is an Old English surname. It means “Wagon-Maker,” from “waegn” (wagon).
