Dominic

Gender: Masculine
Language
: English, French
Etymology:
Dominic is short for the Latin name Dominicus, meaning “of the Lord.”

History:
Dominic can be considered a fairly common name of the Middle Ages. As Dominco, later Domingo, it was found in Spain from the 11th century onwards (declining a bit in the 16th century). In Italy, too, Domenico was popular (as was Domenica for girls)

In England, originally, Dominic was a religious name, only found among monks. After St. Dominic founded the Dominicans (a monastic order dedicated to combatting heresy through preaching and teaching) the influence of that group caused the name to pass into common use.

Though never as common in England as elsewhere, Dominic could be found from the 13th century until the Reformation and has been common in the United States.
