Edgar is the English form of the Old English Eadgar, a name meaning “Rich, Spear,” form “ead” (noble) and “gar” (spear).

Edgar, being the name of several Anglo-Saxon kings and saints, was a great favorite and survived the Norman Invasion. It lasted until the 13th century. Edgar was revived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries along with scores of other Old English/Medieval names. It’s popularity may have been spurred along by Sir Walter Scott’s 1819 novel The Bride of Lammermoor.
