Edmund was a popular Anglo-Saxon name. It was the name of two early Anglo-Saxon kings, as well as two medieval saints. Because King Henry II of England admired the early Edmund, he passed the name to his second son Edmund “Crouchback” Plantagenet the Earl of Leicester, in 1245. Edmund remained popular in the royal and noble families of England (as well as among the lower classes) until the 15th century.
