Eliza
Gender: Feminine
Language: English
Etymology:
Eliza is short for Elizabeth, the English form of the Hebrew name, Elisheva, or Elisheba. Originally it meant My God is Bountiful, God of Plenty, Consecrated to God, Oath of God, God is Satisfaction, or God is Perfection.
History:
Eliza was first used during the 16th century in England. It was mainly popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its current rising popularity may be due to the influence of the popular 1956 musical (and popular 1965 movie) My Fair Lady, based on George Bernard Shaws 1913 play Pygmalion, which featured the character of Eliza Doolittle.
