Elmer is the modern English form of Ethmarr, Aethelmaer, or Aethelmaere, Germanic names. They originally meant Noble, Famous from aethel, or adal (noble), and maer (famous).
History:
Elmer the first name died out after the Norman Invasion. It survived, however, as the surname Elmer. After the American Revolution, it was sometimes given in honor of two American patriots, the brothers Ebenezer and Jonathan Elmer.
