Emmeline is a Germanic name, from “amal” meaning “Work.”

History:
Emmeline was introduced to England by the Normans, as Amaline and was present throughout in the Middle Ages. The medieval forms of Emlin, Emblem, Imblem, and Emlyn had all died away by the 18th century, just as the “corrected” form, Emmeline, was revived.

Although quite common in the 19th century, Emmeline and Emeline seem to have not survived to the 20th.
