Etymology:
Eric is the English form of Eirik, a Scandinavian name. Originally it meant “Always the Ruler ” or “One King,” from “ei” (ever), or “einn” (one, alone) and “ríkr” (ruler).

History:
Eric was introduced to England by Scandinavian marauders before the Norman Invasion. It survived as a rare name until the end of the Middle Ages. Eric was revived in England in the 19th century after an 1858 novel by Frederick William Farrer (Eric: or, Little by Little) became popular.
