Erin is the Anglicized form of Eireann, a Gaelic name which comes from Eire, or Ireland.

Erin, or Eireann, was the poetic name for Ireland (a la Britannia for England, or Columbia for the United States). It rather inexplicably began being used as a first name for girls in the fifties, possibly as a result of the vogue for Irish and Celtic names.
