Evan is a form of Iefan, from Ieuan, a Welsh form of Iovannis, the Vulgar Latin form of Iohannes, the Latin form of a Hebrew name, Yohanan, Johanan, or Yochanan. Originally it meant “The Lord Has Favored,” “Gift of God,” or “God is Good.” (See John).

History:
Evan is found in Wales and England from about the year 1500 (before that it was Iefan, or Yevan). Long a favorite in Wales, it has spread to the rest of the English-speaking world and in now quite common.
