Evangeline has a Greek origin, from the word “evangelium” where it means “Good News” from “eu” (good) and “angeles” (messenger, or angel). The word “gospel” (or “good spell”) is a translation of “evangelium.”

History:
Some sources indicate that Longfellow invented the name Evangeline for his 1847 epic poem. In any case, his work popularized the name, causing a mild explosion of Evangelines in the early 1850s in Britain and the United States.


Evangeline had become a common name by the late 19th century.
