Evelyn
Gender: Masculine and Feminine
Language: English
Etymology:
Evelyn may mean Ancestor.
History:
Evelyn ultimately dates back to an Old Germanic masculine name Avi, whose meaning is unknown. It was feminized as Aveza, Avice, Ava, or Avila. Later it became Avilina, or Avelina. In Normandy, the name became Aveline, or Avenel, especially common in the 12th century. It crossed to England at this time. The name declined after the Middle Ages, but it left a surname, Evelyn, which was revived as a male name in the 17th century. Meanwhile, Evelina, was revived by Fanny Burney for her novel Evelina in 1778. In the 19th century it became Eveline and Evelyn.
