Frideswide was the name of a daughter (-735) of an Anglo-Saxon king (Didan, by name). She founded a convent (St. Mary’s) at Oxford. It was found every so often until the Reformation, whereupon it became very rare. Frideswide could still be found, however, in the 20th century around Oxford as Friday.
