History:
Although there was one Gemma noted in England in 1218, the name was primarily an Italian nickname (it was the name of Dante’s wife). It belonged to a modern Italian saint, St. Gemma Galgani (1878-1903) and was imported from Italy to the English world, but has never yet caught on in the United States.
