Gustavo

Gender: Masculine
Language
: Spanish
Etymology:
Gustavo is the Spanish form of a Latin name, Gustavus, from Gustav or Gustaf, Scandinavian names possibly coming (according to the The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names) from an older German name, Chustaffus, meaning “Meditation, Staff” from “chuton” (to meditate) and “staf” (staff). Other sources say it means “Guatr’s Staff.” Guatr was the name of an old Germanic tribe.

History:
Gustavus, a Scandinavian name, was not really found outside of Scandinavia until the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus made it famous in the 1600s.

In Spain (and Spanish-speaking lands), the Latin name Gustavus became Gustavo. It became fairly common in the latter half of the 20th century.

Please see Gustav for more information.
