History:
Magnus was a title, a Latin word, orginally given to Charlemagne (literally, Charles the Great). Charlemagne was an 8th century ruler of much of Western Europe and one of the founders of feudalism.

Olav II, king of Norway (aka St. Olav, 995-1030), a great admirer of the Frankish emperor named his son Magnus. He later became Magnus I, King of Norway and Denmark (1026-1047)

Magnus I was a much loved monarch, and his name passed into medival Scandinavian royalty. Fom there it was imported into Scotland and Ireland. Magnus has been relativley rare in other places.
