Patrick was the name taken by St. Patrick who converted the island of Ireland to Christianity. It passed to England and the Lowland Scotland in the 12th century, but died out. In Ireland, it was not used until the 15th century in Scotland and the 17th century in Ireland (previously, in Gaelic lands, it was thought to be improper to name children directly after saints).
