Con esta canción Mariah nuevamente debutó en primer lugar del Billboard y se convirtió en su sencillo más exitoso al permanecer 16 semanas en dicha posición. De este modo Mariah & Boyz II Men (con quienes interpreta este clásico) rompieron el de permanencia en el #1 de I Will Always Love You (tema principal de "El Guardaespaldas" e interpretada por Whitney Houston) que ostentaba 14 semanas. Las ventas del single certificaron doble disco de platino, es decir, vendió más de 2 millones de copias en los EE.UU. One Sweet Day fue distinguido en los Billboard Music Awards con un premio especial por su permanencia en el primer lugar del Hot 100 y fue nominada a varios premios Grammy, incluyendo Mejor Canción y Mejor Disco del Año.
