SOCIALISM

Quan Yanchi
Mao Zedong Manusia, Bukan Tuhan

Sedewa apa pun anggapan orang Cina, Mao tetap manusia biasa.

Perjuangan Kelas Di Tengah Krisis Ekonomi
Ji Giles Ungpakorn

No One Here Gets Out Alive
By Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman
With an afterword by Michael McClure

Here is Jim Morrison in all his complexity--singer, philosopher, poet, dilinquent--the brilliant, charismatic and obsessed disipline of darkness who rejected authority in any form, the explorer who probed "the bounds of reality to see what would happen..."

Seven years in the writing, this definitive biography is the work of two men whose empathy and experience with Jim Morrison uniquely prepare them to recount this modern tragedy: Jerry Hopkins, whose famous Presley biography, ELVIS, was inspired by Morrison's suggestion, and Danny Sugerman, confidant of and aide to the Doors. Together they tell the story of a genious who shot like a rocket across the musical horizon, then fell in burning fragments as his life went out of control.

Rocking The State
Edited by Sabrina Petra Ramet

"This lively collection enlarges our view of East-Central European and Russian-Soviet popular culture by its comprehensive sweep and its clever interweave of music, youth, emotion, and political power. Definitely recommended for scholars, students, and other readers interested in 'serious fun.'"

--Richard Stites, Georgetown University

Of the many avenues for expressing disident viewpoints in communist societies, rock music--with its broad appeal among young people--was one of the most effective. Although there were rock groups that sang the praises of communism, other groups struck the pose of "rock rebels," assailing the system through their ribald lyrics and raucous music. Communist regimes generally had a difficult time adjusting to rock music, and some, such as those in Czechoslovakia and Romania, never did accept the new genre. Others, such as the East German government, tried to control and monitor rock by requiring musicians and DJs alike to pass tests on Marxist ideology. Other strategy included censoring lyrics, record covers, and attire; insisting on haircuts for band members; and fussing about jewelry and other adornments worn by rockers. The authorities knew that although these bands could not overthrow the state, they could sing up a storm, and, indeed, rock the state.

Bringing together some of the world's leading authorities on rock music under communism, this book analyzes the rise of specific rock groups throughout Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, examining the broader social culture in which the operated and evaluating the political ramifications of their popularity.

NOVEL

Wuthering Heights
Emily Bronte
With an introduction by John S. Whitley

University of Sussex

Wuthering Heights is the wild, passionate story of intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death. Heathcliff is bullied and humilliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and, wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

A classic guidebook for noblemen

Penguin 60s Classics

Upon its publication in 1528, Castiglione's handbook was considered something of an instant classic and went on to influence upper-class life and manners for centuries to come, as well as much of the Italian literature that followed it. Using a discussion among courtiers--'soldier-scholars'--as a framing device, these excerpts from Castiglione's landmark volume touch upon such wide-ranging topics as love, war, women, politics, art and religion, providing us with a fascinating glimpse into Renaissance thought. The Book of the Courtier is published in Pinguin Classics.

A Visitation of The Plague
Daniel Defoe

The tears and lamentations of a city under siege.

In the months leading up to the outbreak of the Great Plague of 1665 panic spread over the city of London. Trapped by poverty, a gullible populace became prey to an army of astrologers, charlatans and quack doctors who offered false promises of hope in the face of the impending horror. A Jounal of the Plague Year, from which this extract is taken, is Daniel Defoe's vivid, imaginative reconstruction of the Great Plague of London. Regarded as one of the first great English novels, it is published in Penguin Classics.

Etiquette For Renaissance Gentlemen
Andrew Marvell To His Coy Mistress

'A Man Of Singular Desert' Milton

Andrew Marvell, poet, tutor, civil servant, satirist and politician, lived through the turbulent years of the English Civil War. Somewhat enigmatic, detached, he saw both sides of fundamental and difficult issues and sought to reconcile opposite - Royalism and Republicanism, spiritualism and sensuality, outer and inner worlds. In his poems he balances opposing principles and explores public and private spheres of life with witty delicacy, passionate paradox and a truly 'metaphysical' use of language.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
ANNE BRONTE

With a specially commissioned Introduction and Notes by Kathryn White, Assistant Curator/Librarian of the Bronte Parsonage Museum, Haworth, Yorkshire.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a powerful and sometimes violent novel of expectation, love, oppression, sin, religion and betrayal. It portrays the disintegration of the marriage of Helen Huntingdon, the mysterious 'tenant' of the title, and her dissolute, alcoholic husband. Defying convention, Helen leaves her husband to protect their young son from his father's influence, and earns her own living as an artist. Whilst in hiding at Wildfell Hall, she encounters Gilbert Markham, who falls in love with her.

On its first publication in 1848, Anne Bront&s second novel was criticised for being 'coarse' and 'brutal'. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall challenges the social conventions of the early nineteenth century in a strong defence of women's rights in the face of psychological abuse from their husbands. Anne Bronte's style is bold, naturalistic and passionate, and this novel, which her sister Charlotte considered 'an entire mistake', has earned Anne a position in English literature in her own right, not just as the youngest member of the Bronte family.

This newly reset text is taken from a copy of the 1848 second edition in the Library of the Bronte Parsonage Museum and has been edited to correct known errors in that edition.

Student Hijo
Marco Kartodikromo

Discipline and Punish
Michel Foucault

"Imaginative, illuminating [and] innovative... Must be reckoned with by humanist, social scientists and political activists."

--The New York Time Book Review

Barely two hundred and fifty years ago a man condemned of attempting to assassinate the King of France was drawn and quartered in a grisly spectacle that suggested an unmediated duel between the violence of the criminal and the violence of the state. This groundbreaking book by the most influential philosopher since Sartre compels us to reevaluate our assumption about all the ensuing reforms in the penal institutions of the West. For as he examines innovations that range from the aboliton of torture to the institution of forced labor and the appearance of the modern penitentiary, Michel Foucault suggests that punishment has shifted its locus from the prisoner's body to his soul--and that our very concern with rehabilitation encourages and refines criminal activity.

Lucidly reasond and deftly marshalling a vast body of research, Discipline and Punish is a genuinely revolutionary book, whose implications extend beyond the prison to the minute power relations of our society.

"Foucault is quite central to our sense of where we are.... [He] is carrying out, in the noblest way, the promiscuous aim of true culture."

--Richard Howard, The Nation

The Order of Things
Michel Foucault

"An alert and sensitive mind which can ignore the familiar surfaces of established intellectual codes and ask new question... Foucault gives a dramatic quality to the movement of intelectual culture.... [His] book must be judged as a contribution to the history and philosophy of scientific thought."

-- The New York Review of Book

In the work that established him as the most important French thinker since Sartre, Michel Foucault offers startling evidence that "man"--man as a subject of scientific knowledge--is at best a recent invention, the result of a fundamental mutation in our culture.

With vast erudition Foucault cuts across disciplines and reaches back into the seventeenth century to show how classical systems of knowledge, which linked all of nature within a great chain of being and saw analogies between the stars in the heavens and the features in a human face, gave way to the modern science of biology, philology, and political economy. The result is nothing less than an archaeology of the sciences that unearths old patterns of mening and reveals the shocking arbitrariness of our received truths.

"The Order of Things display an extraordinary range of information and imagination, and its these ought to be taken note of and learned from."

--New Republic

GENDER

The Second Sex
Simone de Beauvoir
With a new introduction by Deirde Bair

One day I wanted to explain myself to myself... And it struck me with a sort of surprise that the first thing I had to say was 'I am a woman.' -- Simone de Beavoir.

This triumphat and genuinely revolutionary book began as an exceptional woman's attempt to find out who and what she was. It ended up shocking, infuriating, and galvanizing millions of readers and dramatically revising the way women talk and think about themselves. Drawing on extensive interviews with women of every age and station of life, masterfully synthesizing research about women's bodies and psyches as well as their historic and economic roles, The Second Sex is an encyclopedic and brilliantly argue document of inequality and enforced "otherness." Forty years later, it retains all of its vitality and passion, while confirming Simone de Beauvoir's stature as one of the most significant thinkers of the twentieth century.

"To take on this glorious and fantastic book is not like reading at all--from the first sentence to the last, one has the sensation of playing some dreadfully exciting ... game ... What is so unbearably whirling is that the author too goes through this mad effort to include nearly every woman and attitude that has ever existed." Elizabeth Hardwick
