Manhattan - Christmas 2000

Grand Central

The sculptures of Mercury, Hercules, and Minerva surrounding the station clock, over the 42nd Street entrance to Grand Central terminus, are visible through the snow storm of 30 December.

I first visited the terminus on Christmas eve. Light from the three 75 feet-high windows flood the main concourse. 2,500 stars in the vaulted ceiling complement the zodiac designs. In the period before Christmas classical music accompanies a spectacular laser show projected onto the ceiling. The display stops travellers and tourists alike as the zodiac signs come alive and interact with one another. The laser images describe snowmen, snow, reindeer, holly, and mistletoe, all dancing in time to the music.

The grand staircases at either end of the concourse are styled after the staircase in the Paris Opera House.

Oh, it is possible to catch trains too.
